Dear Friend of Norwalk ACTS,

A year ago, I had the privilege of stepping into leadership of an organization that has a long history in Norwalk, and a number of times I was asked . . . what does Norwalk ACTS do? Over the last 12 months, I've spent a great deal of time reflecting on where Norwalk ACTS has been and where we're headed. Before thinking about the future, however, I found myself returning to a more fundamental conundrum: how to explain our true value to the community.

Our true value to Norwalk families lies in our ability to create a community where every child has the opportunity to thrive because the people and organizations that shape their lives are working together with purpose, insight, and a shared commitment to their success.

Guided by the principle of collective impact and data-driven decision making, Norwalk ACTS brings people together to solve systemic challenges that no single organization can solve alone. We drive community-wide impact by aligning 200+ cross-sector partners around shared cradle-to-career goals, helping the entire ecosystem work smarter, together. Whether the goal is kindergarten readiness, school to community youth well-being, or stronger pathways to college and career, the role Norwalk ACTS plays in our community is made possible, in large part, by supporters like you who believe that lasting change happens when a community works together. 

Throughout the coming year, I look forward to sharing our progress, lessons learned, and opportunities ahead. My hope is that these quarterly updates will provide transparency, keep you connected to our work, and deepen your engagement as a strategic partner in advancing brighter outcomes for Norwalk's children and families.

At Norwalk ACTS, we advance change through three complementary approaches: Awareness, Connection, and Training. Together, these initiatives strengthen the partnerships, knowledge, and capacity needed to improve outcomes across the cradle-to-career continuum. This past quarter offered several examples of that work in action.  Here’s an overview of how Norwalk ACTS showed up for the community most recently:

Awareness:

Change begins with a shared understanding of both challenges and opportunities. Through community engagement, data analysis, and cross-sector learning, we continue to help partners make informed decisions that create meaningful change for Norwalk’s children and youth. This quarter, we shared early learning data collected through our Early Childhood Development Initiative with Norwalk’s public school kindergarten teachers. This data helps educators better understand incoming kindergarten students before the school year even begins, allowing them to identify needs earlier and tailor support from day one. Much of this important work is accomplished by our trusted Community Advocates whose relationships and cultural understanding help connect families to resources and support earlier, when it can have the greatest impact on a child’s future learning trajectory.

Connection:

More than 60 community stakeholders gathered at our June Quarterly Convening to celebrate progress, share insights, and strengthen the relationships that make collective impact possible. Through a discussion led by our partners at the CT Data Collaborative, participants explored how data can be used to make more informed decisions and better align resources to community needs.

We also joined our Connecticut Cradle to Career Coalition partners from Bridgeport, Danbury, Stamford, and Waterbury for our first-ever all-staff meeting. Norwalk ACTS was proud to share lessons from our work in the Early Childhood Development and Kindergarten Readiness space, while learning from peers committed to improving outcomes for children and families across the state.

Training:

More than 70 youth-serving professionals and community partners participated in our largest community-wide Day of Training to date. Through workshops focused on youth mental health, trauma-informed care, developmental relationships, and other critical topics, participants gained practical tools to better support the children and families they serve. Thanks to the generosity of New Canaan Community Foundation and Northwell Health, this opportunity was offered free of charge to the community.

This quarter also brought meaningful investments in our work. Fairfield County Community Foundation's Youth Philanthropy Council awarded the first dedicated grant to our Youth Advocates program, while support from the New Canaan Community Foundation will help strengthen our early childhood systems efforts. Together, these investments reflect growing confidence in collaborative approaches that strengthen systems, build community capacity, and create lasting change for children and families.

Looking ahead, Norwalk ACTS is entering an exciting new chapter. While our mission remains unchanged, we are refining how we communicate our work and our value to the community. This effort is not about changing who we are, but about more clearly articulating the unique role Norwalk ACTS plays in aligning people, resources, data, and strategies to achieve better outcomes for children and families. We believe this greater clarity will strengthen partnerships, attract new investment, and expand our impact in the years ahead.

The challenges facing children and families are complex, but they are also solvable when communities work together.
